Currently there are 72 Somali refugees in Kathmandu who in turn make up a quarter of the illegal refugee population, or “Urban Refugees” as the government calls them. Like many countries in Asia, Nepal never signed the 1951 UN Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees, which means that Nepal does not recognize the status of refugees inside her borders. Thus, in Nepal all refugees are officially illegal immigrants, save for a few chosen groups of Bhutanese and Tibetans living in camps around the country.
